What is Kratom?
The Kratom Tree or Mitragyna speciosa is a tropical evergreen tree in the Rubiaceae or coffee tree family. Kratom is native to Southeast Asia, specifically the tropical rainforests of Malaysia, Thailand and Indonesia. The powder and leaves of Mitragyna Speciosa were originally used by Southeast Asians in to aid with work and for medicinal purposes. The leaves of this plant are made up of two main alkaloids- Mitragynine and 7-Hydroxymitragynine, both of which interact with the opioid receptors in the brain that often results in sedation, pleasure and decreased pain and can increase energy and focus levels.
The Kratom tree is a massive tree, soaring at heights of up to 80 feet and is well known and sought after for its glossy green leaves. The leaves of these tropical trees can all vary in color, size and potency, with the color of the vein of the leaf determining the strain of the Kratom. These strains are red, white, green, yellow and brown. The color of each leaf’s vein can change based on a variety of factors, such as amount of sunlight, genetics and the state of maturity the leaf is in.
The primary function of Kratom is as a stimulant, but the laundry list of benefits of this versatile plant is seemingly endless. For one, the same strain taken for energy at a low dose can often also be taken for a more relaxing effect at a higher dose. Different strains offer different benefits and run the gamut from pain relief to sleep aid, cognitive engagement to being a fantastic choice for anti-anxiety. Certain strains are also regarded as a very effective alternative to alleviating opioid withdrawal symptoms and providing pain relief comparable to those of pharmaceutical-grade painkillers. The list truly goes on but we will go more into detail on that when we get into specific strain benefits.

This due to its effectiveness and the lack of crippling side effects that can be associated with traditional western pain relief medicines. It is important to note that you should always consult a physician before using Kratom for assistance with opioid withdrawal, but studies have shown that Kratom acts on opioid receptors, so it would be most effective once opiates are out of the system.
Ailments and Pain Conditions that are symptoms can effectively be treated with Kratom:
The list truly goes on and is endless in terms of Kratom’s ability to fight pain. Its effectiveness is due to its main alkaloid Mitragynine.
Best Strains for Pain Management
Kratom is incredibly effective with pain management due to its main alkaloid Mitragynine which is most commonly known for its success when used for treatment of chronic pain, depression and anxiety and for opioid withdrawal symptoms. In addition to Mitragynine, the evergreen leaves also contain another very potent alkaloid called 7-Hydroxymitragynine which tends to focus more on energy production and boosting mood. The balance of the two determines the effects or benefits that you will experience from the leaf. The ones with higher levels of Mitragynine are the ones to look for when wanting that pain-relieving effect. Red and Green Vein Strains being the strongest.

The Main Alkaloids in Kratom
Alkaloids are a natural reoccurring nitrogen-based organic compound that makes up a plant. They contain a broad spectrum of benefits ranging from benefits like pain relief, anti-inflammatory, anti-cancer properties and have even been used to fight the war against opioid abuse.
There are two main alkaloids in Kratom or Mitragyna Speciosa leaves and they are Mitragynine and 7-Hydroxymitragynine.
Mitragynine– This alkaloid is classified the primary alkaloid in Mitragyna Speciosa or Kratom. It is most commonly used for the treatment of chronic pain, depression and anxiety and opioid withdrawal symptoms. Kratom strains highest in Mitragynine are the Red Vein Strains.
7-hydroxymitragynine– This alkaloid is also referred to as 7-Hydroxy and metabolized from Mitragynine. This alkaloid is best known for its use as a stimulant and for providing boosted focus and an overall sense of well-being. Kratom Strains’ highest in 7-hydroxy are the White Vein Kratom Strains and Green Vein Kratom strains.

Kratom Extracts
Kratom extract is the most potent form of Kratom there is. It comes in tincture, powder, oil and liquid shot form. This highly potent extract is created by brewing crushed Kratom leaves or powdered Kratom leaves in either water or ethanol for a prolonged period of time. This process results in the liquid evaporating and the Kratom turning to a thick green paste that is extremely high in Kratoms’ main alkaloids Mitragynine and 7-Hydroxymitragynine. The paste then dries out to be what is called an Enhanced Kratom powder that looks a lot like the original powder except that it has an iridescent sheen to it. This new form can be up to 60 times more potent than that of traditional Kratom leaves. Basically, the longer you brew the leaves the stronger the alkaloid content will be.
Here are the four basic levels of Kratom Extracts
10X: This signifies an extract powder with 10 times the normal concentration of Kratom alkaloids.
15X: This signifies an extract powder with 15 times the normal concentration of Kratom alkaloids.
25X: This signifies an extract powder with 25 times the normal concentration of Kratom alkaloids.
50X: This signifies an extract powder with 50 times the normal concentration of Kratom alkaloids.
Kratom Dosage
The dosing of Kratom plays a key role in the efficacy of it. Certain strains cause a completely different response at low doses than they do at higher doses. Not too mention the fact that taking too low of a dose can potentially leave you disappointed since it just may not be enough to affect you at all, while too high of a dose can often result in unpleasant side effects like a reaction referred to as the “wobbles” where you can have a hard time focusing your eyes and too much can also oftentimes cause nausea.
When you are measuring your Kratom and you do not have a scale just know that 1 tsp-4 grams and 1 tbsp-14 grams.
Average Dosing
•Mild – 1-2 grams
•Medium – 2-4.5 grams
•High – 4.5-8 grams
It is important to note that it is always good to start low and slow with any strain of Kratom the first time, as each individual is affected differently. It is also important to remember that Kratom is not meant to be taken on an empty stomach and it acts as a diuretic so it is important to drink plenty of water.
Wobbles with Kratom
In the world of Kratom usage pretty much everyone eventually comes to hear the term “The Wobbles”. The wobbles is a term that was coined by Kratom users that describes the very apparent side effect of having a hard time focusing your vision without straining. It has been compared to having the spins when you drink too much alcohol. This oftentimes leads to headaches and nausea.
How to Avoid the Wobbles
Avoiding the wobbles is actually quite simple. First and foremost always remember to make sure when start any Kratom strain, to start low and slow. If you new to Kratom try starting with 2 grams or 1 tsp and if you are a new brand or strain try cutting your dose in half to start.
Strains that have a higher Wobble Risk
•Bali
•Super’s
•Maeng Da
How to Fight the Wobbles
•Activated Charcoal– Activated Charcoal is essentially a sponge for other chemicals or substances in the body’s system. If you are experiencing the wobbles you can take this supplement and it will absorb a portion of the Kratom-negating the effects typically all together.
•Carbonated Beverages– Carbonated beverages can speed up the half-life of supplements so while it can’t make the wobbles stop, it can make the symptoms pass more quickly.
Ways to Prepare Kratom
Toss and Wash Method
The toss and wash method is probably the most common method used by Kratom enthusiasts today. This is for the Kratom users who prefer the powder form of Kratom and just as it sounds is a simple process where you fill your mouth with some water or liquid of choice and let it sit at the back of your throat and then pour the Kratom powder in gradually as you gargle the mixture and then you just simply swallow. It doesn’t taste the best, but it’s still much better than taking the powder dry, which we do not recommend.
Mixing and Kratom Shakes
Another common and refreshing way to consume Kratom is by adding a teaspoon or two to your favorite beverage. One of the most popular in the Kratom world is chocolate milk-this one is a good one because the milk neutralizes the tannins in Kratom reducing the bitterness. The most popular juices to mix your Kratom into are orange juice, lemonade and pineapple juice as the citrus in the juices increase the potency of the alkaloid mitragynine. Then for those of you who enjoy your morning protein shake, Kratom can easily be thrown in there for an added boost of energy.
Kratom Capsule
Consuming Kratom in capsule form is without a doubt the least complicated route to go. Kratom powder is encapsulated typically in gel caps making for a mess-free, seemingly tasteless option in comparison to the other methods available for consumption. Kratom capsules are however considerably more expensive than the other forms of Kratom available and consequently, unreputable brands of these capsules oftentimes sold in convenience stores at lower prices have given Kratom a bad name. So it is important to do your research and only purchase your Kratom from reputable retailers. Most capsules tend to hold .55g per capsule.
Kratom Tea
Another very popular way to prepare Kratom is by making it into a tea. While this process can be quite a bit more time consuming than that of the toss and wash and capsule method, it is still a great alternative to those more traditional methods and can be a really nice treat when flavored properly.
Kratom Tea Preparation
Crushed Leaf Kratom Tea
This method is probably the most popular way to make Kratom tea. Using the crushed Kratom leaves typically results in a clear non-textured beverage.

Is Kratom Addictive?
Kratom or Mitragyna Speciosa is in the coffee plant family and so as a result, much like other stimulants and very similar to caffeine, Kratom can be addictive. So just like with coffee and other energy drinks where if you had multiple drinks a day and then just stopped without tapering down, you would experience withdrawal symptoms, the same concept applies to Kratom. It’s important to note that when consuming any substance it’s good to start low and slow.
Kratom and Tolerance
Like with many other substances including the stimulant variety, tolerance is something that adjusts itself as time goes by. Here are some tips you can use to keep your Kratom tolerance low and allow yourself to get the most out of each dose.
Kratom Tolerance Maintenance Methods
•Strain Rotation– Often times when using the same Kratom strain for prolonged periods of time you build up a resistance resulting in having to take more to feel the effects. The solution to this is cycling your strains throughout the week. For example, choosing a day of the week to take a certain strain based on vein color or effects like Monday-Green, Tuesday-Red, Wednesday-White and so on or Monday-Stimulant, Tuesday-Euphoric, Wednesday-Sedating and so on.
•Energy Source Mixup– Another way to keep your Kratom tolerance down is to practice a little energy source confusion. You can do this by alternating your stimulant sources, like switching between Kratom and say maybe coffee to keep your tolerance down. You can also try adding coffee to certain strains like green and white vein strains to overcome the tolerance hurdle.
•Days off and Tapering– We also recommend taking one day off a week or tapering down your dose one day a week.
Kratom Potentiators
Potentiators are any drug, herb or chemical that can be added to a supplement to increase their efficacy. Kratom has several great potentiators that will both enhance the potency and length of time it will last.
The Top Five Kratom Potentiators
Grapefruit
Not only is grapefruit an amazing way to make Kratom easier to consume due if it’s flavor masking abilities, but it is also an amazing Kratom potentiator. By either drinking the juice or just outright eating a piece of grapefruit you can lengthen the effects of Kratom and increase the intensity of the benefits at the same time.
Chamomile Tea
This tea is known for its relaxing effects and although it is not known to increase the effects of Kratom, it is great at lengthening the duration of its effects. Chamomile tea is most often taken with fermented strains like Yellow Vein and Chocolate Vein Kratom.
Watercress
Watercress is a powerhouse all around. It’s the super hydrated version of lettuce and has an amazing nutritional profile as it holds tons of antioxidants and cancer-fighting compounds. Plus, when used as a Kratom potentiator it not only doubles the strength of the Kratom strain but it improves the duration immensely.
Cayenne Pepper
This spicy pepper works so well as a potentiator that it is only recommended to be used in very small amounts. It is reported to increase the effects substantially, however, it is not known to increase duration.
Turmeric
Turmeric has been a rising star in the world of supplements for quite some time now. With its main active ingredient being curcumin. Turmeric has an ever-expanding list of health benefits, such as it’s a fantastic anti-inflammatory and it’s very well known for its high antioxidant content. When taken with Bioperine (black pepper extract), turmeric acts as one of the most potent Kratom potentiators available. It does this by giving you the biggest boost in efficacy possible, as well as producing the longest duration of Kratom effects of all the potentiators.
